What is the Institute?

The University of Dundee has had a reputation for providing high-quality simulated clinical activity for the last two decades. In an exciting new development, we have brought together two centres within the organisation to create the Dundee Institute of Healthcare Simulation (DIHS). The DIHS capitalises on the expertise of NHS Tayside, and support of industrial partners including Medtronic plc and Karl Storz GmBH to create a facility that delivers a wide range of high-quality simulated clinical activity that is diverse both in terms of stage of learning and professional scope.

Current activity within the DIHS spans healthcare practice, and includes all aspects of healthcare provision including procedural, surgical, communication and non-technical skills. Significant recent advances have been made in developing cadaveric models for image-guided therapies, and developing national programmes for clinical and communication skills.

Collaborative partners

The Institute works closely with our colleagues at NHS Education for Scotland (NES) to provide endoscopy and ENT surgery programmes, surgical skills for general practitioners, the national optometry clinical skills and national pharmacy clinical skills programmes.  All of these programmes support our healthcare practitioners to enhance their roles through surgical training and clinical assessment skills.
