Experience from teaching MRCEM OSCE/Part C courses for over ten years has shown us that most candidates would benefit from a structured approach to preparing for their MRCEM Part C/OSCE exam and that many weeks, if not months, of training and practice, are required to be confident of success. This is particularly true of candidates unfamiliar with the OSCE style of examination or who have trained and/or work in medical systems significantly different to the UK.

Currently, no online or printed materials provide such a structured approach over such a period of time and face to face OSCE courses, while of great benefit in honing OSCE skills through real-time OSCE practice, are not sufficient on their own to deliver success to the inexperienced and unprepared candidate. Hence to fill this gap for all candidates preparing for the MRCEM PartC/OSCE exam we have created this online course.

In creating the course we have brought together the unique experience, materials, and skills of the Bromley Emergency Courses Part C/OSCE faculty into a structured approach for OSCE preparation. The course charts a logical path through the MRCEM PartC/OSCE exam, building knowledge and skills (hard and soft) from the ground up. It is divided into a series of modules which can be viewed independently but would be best studied in order as each one builds on the preceding ones. The 7 modules of the course are:

Introductory Module. Introduction to OSCEs & the MRCEM Part C/OSCE exam.

Module 1. Core clinical skills: History taking, examination and communication.

Module 2. Advanced communications skills.

Module 3. Resuscitation OSCEs.

Module 4. Psychiatry OSCEs.

Module 5. Procedures & airway management.

Module 6. Final touches: Management & model OSCEs.

The course starts with a detailed look at OSCEs in general, dissecting them into their component parts and looking at best approach and technique. We then discuss the content of the MRCEM OSCE/Part C exam and the types of OSCE it contains. Module 1 establishes a firm foundation for which all other OSCE skills are built and describes and demonstrates in example videos and study material best practice in history taking, examination, and communications skills. The all-important theme of communications skills is further explored in module 2 where you study the Calgary-Cambridge method, as well as videos and teaching on how to present cases and demonstrate teaching skills in OSCEs. The structured approach to resuscitation OSCEs and psychiatry OSCEs is taught in Modules 3 and 4, again with many study materials and example videos. Module 5 outlines the approach to procedures stations and contains demonstration videos of key procedures and airway skills needed for the Part C/OSCE exam. Finally, we complete the course with Module 6 which presents a series of teaching videos around management style OSCE topics and then a 'circuit' of 15 model OSCEs showing how to do it on the day!

We advise starting your MRCEM OSCE/Part C exam preparation as early as possible before the exam, ideally 5-6 months before, but this course can be used at any stage in your exam preparation and you can move either faster or slower through the course depending on the pace at which you feel you are mastering each modules's content.
